In 2008, we were the first driving school to introduce green ideas into driver training. It was so unusual it generated a feature in the Eastern Daily Press. To this day, as far as we know we are the only driving school to offer carbon offsetting as part of the lesson price.
You may be wondering what carbon offsetting is, how it benefits the environment and how it works with regard to learning to drive?
Carbon offsetting is a way to balance your carbon footprint. Many of our activities produce tons of carbon dioxide. Offsetting restores the balance by locking up the equivalent amount of carbon dioxide.
By calculating how much carbon your activities produce you can then plant trees that will in turn absorb that much carbon over the course of the trees lifetime. You in effect become carbon neutral.
Carbon offsetting is particularly beneficial when it comes to areas where it is difficult to make a significant reduction in other ways. Learning to drive is one of those areas because manufacturing cars, producing fuel; every aspect of driving has a carbon cost. This is by far the best way to contribute to reducing carbon in a non-green activity such as driving.
We are very aware it is not the ideal solution but it’s a start.
How does it benefit the environment? In very simple terms, it locks up carbon dioxide, which would other wise remain in the atmosphere adding to the green house effect and the acidification of the oceans.
We all have a carbon footprint and many people are trying to reduce the size of their carbon footprint, carbon offsetting is an effective practical solution that enables you to do that.
How does it work when it comes to driving lessons? We will monitor the number of lessons and mileage covered while you are learning to drive and use the carbon calculator to determine how many trees will need to be planted to offset the amount of carbon. We will arrange for trees to be planted in your name and you will receive a certificate telling you the location.
It’s that simple and it costs you nothing extra to be carbon neutral.
